Friday Finds

Oh how I wish I had an old piano to paint a bright color like this...

I love the idea of a great big yellow prop for fall decorating. Of course that won't happen here!

Wild Bill (who spent 5 or 6 years of his childhood taking lessons) goes crazy when he hears about people painting pianos and other musical instruments. The lecture goes...paint can block the pores in the wood and change the tone...yada, yada, yada.

But the point Wild Bill misses is that most old pianos aren't kept anymore for playing unless it's an expensive one that's been well cared for. Usually old pianos have long past their prime and may have missing parts and are seldom played. Why not repurpose one for another use?

I found the yellow piano, and lots of other wonderful ideas at the Grace At Home party over at the blog IMPARTING GRACE

Thanks for dropping by!

  1. Thank you so much for sharing. I probably wouldn't have painted this had we played. But the piano was already old and out of tune, so I figured it a good project.

    1. I don't think many people play the old pianos in their house. My husband only plays keyboards himself. I just love the look of it and it's such a happy piece!

  2. Oh I hear you! One of the ladies in our painting group had a piano in her home, and could not find anyone who would take it... they ended up chopping it up for fire wood. That is far greater a "Sin" thank painting it. Have we stopped appreciating beauty?

  3. If the piano is really useable it would be cool. I would hate to ruin a good instrument as well.
I have the violin I played for 9 years as a child - I keep thinking about refinishing it and putting in a shadow box or something. Although I really have no room for that.

    That yellow is festive!

  6. It would make a great conversation piece. I had no idea that paint could alter the sound.

  7. There's not a soul playing the piano here either but it would be fun to have one painted a bright, unexpected color. Maybe you could paint something else that yellow.

    1. Stacey, I have been thinking the same thing, but we are getting rid of stuff to put the house up for sale. I do think in a future house something big is going to get a bright color painted on it!

  8. We have an old player piano in the house. It's a family heirloom, but I think it would be much more fun in a bight color. Red perhaps? ;)

  10. I love the bright color too. I have send some old pianos repurposed into things like writing desks. I kind of like that idea :) I think that an old piano can be a focal point like a fireplace mantel . . . something to decorate around with the seasons.

  11. If only we had endless places to store said seasonal stuff .
I'm constantly downsizing, only to find I buy replacements....
    Ooh, dear.
