Fruitcake...Yea Or Nay?

One thing about fruitcake...you either really love it or really hate it

For those of us who hate it, this sign is an oxymoron.

I'm proud to say I'm in the "Really Hate It" camp.
I'm a single hold-out here in Texas though where my husband, mother, father-in-law and mother-in-law all love it to death.

But they only like the fruitcake from a place here in Texas called COLLIN STREET BAKERY. The bakery was started in 1896 in Corsicana Texas and has operated continually since then.

Luckily, they've branched out and there's a bakery shop in Greenville, Texas, which we pass by on our way down to Trade Days in Canton TX, which is the home of my favorite Texas store... LaurieAnna's.

I do love to stop by the Collin Street Bakery shops though. The decor is why I stop. Here's the lights, which are made out of rolling pins. We were there for Christmas season, and I loved all the Christmas decorations. See the two large Nutcrackers standing guard over the room?

The bread boxes were incredibly cute too. It is with deep regret that I left without one. Especially since they were on sale for $19.95

The fruitcakes were priced around $26 each and were eaten within a few weeks despite getting one for each person so they didn't even have to share.
How about you...Would 25% off sound like Heaven-In-A-Cake-Tin to you?

Me? I'm more of a chocolate gal. This whole cold case was calling my name! They don't call me Sugar for nothing...
Next time we go down to the Canton 1st Monday Trade Days, held the last weekend of each month, I'll be stopping by for everything anything in this glass case and a nice hot cup of tea.

Oh yeah...one of those breadboxes too please.

Thanks for dropping by!

  1. My favorite thing at the Collin Street Bakery is the chicken salad sandwich. Yummy. :)

  2. It looks amazing, I would definitely be buying everything in the case too as well as a fruit cake and I would also be tempted by the Texas pecan cake. Beautiful décor.

  3. I want to be of the Hate It persuasion. But if I start eating a well made one, I find it hard to stop. But, like you, I'd be more drawn to the chocolate case.

  4. Well, I'm sorry to say I like fruitcake, BUT only my own. It has chocolate chips in it. As a child, I remember my mom always waiting for one of her friends to come around with her fruitcakes, they were good. I NEVER buy one, heck I hardly every buy cake. I love to bake. But I think the showcase of goodies looks awesome.

  5. I'm in the "really hate it" crowd also. My grandmother use to make it every Christmas. Mother would let it sit until it got harder and then eventually throw it out. :-) Love and hugs!

  7. I'm afraid that I am in the "hate it" camp too. My parents liked fruitcake and often purchased from Collin Street Bakery. I have never considered myself to be a picky eater, but maybe I am because I don't like coconut either. Hmmm...

  8. It seems odd to be discussing fruit cake in Feburary, but I for one am a fan on the "Yay" side. But sorry, it HAS to be be homemade. I don't care too much for storebought. And it must be dark fruitcake ;) Mmmmmmmm!!

  9. I wish we had a place like that here. It looks charming. I would have left the fruitcake behind, and bought the tin. However, I would like to try making a fruitcake someday.

  10. I'm in the hate it camp but my twin sister is in the love it camp. Funny, huh? I would stop in Collin Street Bakery on our way to Dallas to get her one for Christmas. She has finally sworn off of them because of the calories. Lol. Oh, she had to soak it in rum like my grandmother did.

  11. Sugar, if you read my November 17 post, you know I'm in the love-it camp! But *only* my homemade fruitcake *or* the Deluxe from Corsicana. Love it! And I would have had a terrible time walking away from that breadbox.
