It's been a few years since this book changed my life...
If you haven't heard, Netflix now has an 8-part TV show starring Marie Kondo and eight American families/couples.
If you've read Marie's book, you'll love the show...if you haven't read Marie's book, you'll probably love the show too!
Each episode starts with a real-life mess of a home. Through a series of weeks, Marie and an interpreter (Marie speaks some English, but mostly Japanese) visit the home, explain and demonstrate the "KonMarie Method" of tidying up, and help the participants work through emotional issues that come to the surface.
Wild Bill and I binge watched all eight episodes in one day. If you can keep a dry eye through most of the episodes, you will do far better than I did!
Our whole family has been reporting in on the progress that's been made in our respective homes since watching the eight episodes...pantries, closets, shelves, and whole rooms have been cleaned out and made over!
Reading Marie's book does get you going, but if you watch the TV show it will really enforce Marie Kondo's principles in your life.
I have to admit, back when I sorted my belongings after reading the book, I might have found joy in too many of them!
After seeing people on the show pile up their belongings and talk through their emotions, I had a renewed desire to go back and determine again if I really felt joy with all my things.
Thanks for dropping by!
NOTE: For my post on this book, which I did in 2015, here is a link in case you would like further info Life Changing Books and here's a link to Marie Kondo's KonMarie website.

Sounds like a book and programme I need to look at! Sorry I haven't been around much, I've just returned from the States so I'm catching up with all my blog reading now!
ReplyDeleteI have not read Marie's book but her show is on my watch list. Enjoy your week.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of her. But I will admot that I do find JOY in too many of the things that I have!! LOL! I am so happy that your husband is doing well. My nephew has colon cancer and his prognosis is not that good as it has spread to the liver. He is fighting a tough fight too. He is only 46 with 3 young daughters. My heart breaks for them. I pray 2018 is a much better year for everyone and that 2019 brings you much JOY!!! Sending prayers your way!

Debbie
I read the book. I've watched the first two of the show and will watch the rest. And I think honestly, truly that she is totally crazy -- but I really admire her because I think she has turned a major OCD issue into a mega-million career and industry and I applaud that. And while I don't really like her method, it does force the issue and make one really evaluate things. (And yes, I've done some of her techniques so I'm commenting with some actual experience not just from the gut!) Her folding technique is amazing and works like a dream. And since I'm on my New Year's quest to continue downsizing my stuff, I will probably be holding some of her strategies in my head and using them. And watching the rest of the shows. But I still think she is seriously over the top. However, seeing the houses in that show reminded me to at least keep mine tidy!
ReplyDeleteI have never come across the book or the programme but your post certainly made me think about possessions and what they mean to me. Since downsizing considerably we do have to control what comes in and stays in our cosy cottage.
ReplyDeleteThat's the book I was supposed to buy months ago but never did. I'll check and see if we can get that program on Direct TV. I've just read your last wonderful post!
ReplyDeleteI've heard a lot of good about this book, but have never read it, you have certainly spiked my curiosity! We downsized several years ago, and I'm thankful every day we did! We had always lived in 2000+ sq.ft. homes, and got radical and moved into a 780 sqft home... what a change - for the better! But I must say the hardest part of it was what I call "memory heavy" stuff... so hard to know what to do with it. I must look for this series, sounds great. So thankful to hear the good news on your husband's scan! Praise the Lord! May the Lord continue to bless you this year! Love and hugs :)
ReplyDeleteWe have Netflix so I will be checking out the show. Haven't heard of either, but am interested. I have been purging and need to do more. I am currently snagged and stopped after opening a box that contained my childhood scrapbook and a box of cards that I have saved over the years from family and friends. I need to let some of that stuff go, but it is very hard. Love and hugs!
ReplyDeleteBenita, the KonMarie Method helps you avoid sentimental issues by following a plan. First you do clothes, then books. You don't get to personal possessions until you've built up the ability to know how to choose what means the most to you. The book is about $10. Highly recommend it!
DeleteI've been hearing a lot about her and want to check out her program!
ReplyDeleteOrganizing is in my blood - I love it and get much satisfaction from it. I caught her new show the other evening...so fun and she is great!
ReplyDeleteRivercrest,
ReplyDeleteEditing is on going . . .
every year, (usually, every Season) I, too begin the process over.
Thank you for sharing this great resource.

Hmmm...it's tempting to sign up for Netflix again just to watch this. I find too much joy myself!
ReplyDeleteOh my, I think I need this book and to binge watch the show too!
ReplyDeleteI have been hearing a lot about this series. I may have to check it out. I need some help in tidying up at times.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for stopping by and for giving your opinion on my post about Blogging!!I think your idea about forming maybe a blogging group of those who crave a warmer, gentler way of Blogging is a great idea!! Let me think about how we could do this and I will get back to you to try to formulate something!!Great idea!!

I'll have to watch that. I've been cleaning out drawers and closets since I retired. I'm trying to pare down our belongings. I'd love to organize my seasonal decor and have it be easy to get to. I think I'll always love those things and have a hard time purging them. Thanks for the TV tip. I bet it's a fun show.
ReplyDeleteI am going to ck out her website. I sold my 2800' home and downsized to a 570' vintage farmhouse 3000 miles away. I seriously brought two 28' full trucks to my farmhouse as I had a fast closing and not much time to downsize. I have made great progress and continue to sort and sift my belongings. Yet, I really like to decorate and end up keeping or searching for inventory for my booths. I now realize in an effort to simplify and downsize even more I can not continue to be a picker. It is to tempting to keep some of the treasures and I already have more than I need for the rest of my life. Downsizing and simplifying is a hot trend now, and I am trying to make it a lifestyle. Great post. Thanks.
