Finally Getting Floors

This is my favorite tear sheet from a magazine showing a stone floor with the grout put on sloppily so it looks like it's been there a long time.  I put this picture out on the kitchen counter so the tile setters will remember how I don't want the new floor to look glossy and perfect.

Here's the before of the master bathroom with the stained and scored cement floors. The goal in here is to be able to use my beloved steam mop to clean the floors, as well as lighten up the room.
We bought a builder's spec home a while back and we're finally moving forward with some much needed upgrades!
Here's some pictures of the old stained cement floors. They are really hard on your feet and legs.
The new floor will be stone tiles from Mexico. We took a long time deciding because we don't particularily like the tile on the bath tub surround, but it would be a major job to remove them. So matching the new tiles to the old tile was a must.

I don't think having a toliet right by your bed like this will catch on any time soon as a new style!

So far, so good. The tile guys are doing the master bath and the laundry room today, and the guest bath tomorrow. We can't walk on the new stuff tonight.

The powder room bath is waiting until we decide if it will be tile or wood. It's right by the kitchen and I'm not sold on putting wood in the kitchen, but whatever goes in the kitchen the powder room bath will match it for "flow" reasons.

What about you? Wood or tile/stone in your kitchen? Please leave a comment and let me know which way you would go. Thanks for stopping by and come back soon for a look at the finished rooms.

I'm linking up to the Feathered Nest Friday at French Country Cottage. She always has a lot of interesting nesting going on there!

  1. Alot of work going on at your home. Wood floor is easier to stand on than tile or cement. But then again I have thick cow mats :-) to stand on. Hey they are nice and figure if it's great for Bessie it'll be good for my hooves. Er feet! Tile though you can clean and low maintenance. I'm ah big help eh?
Thanks for stopping by and thanks for the well wishes too. I wonder what you will decide on the floor. Have a great night.

  3. Love the tile and it really lightens up the room. I have dark hardwood floors in the entire downstairs, including the kitchen. I can tell you they show everything! I will go with tile next time.

  4. The new tile looks beautiful and really lightens up the bathroom! I LOVE the look of wood floors in the kitchen, but have tile myself. I have kids and pets running around here and find that it is super easy to clean and maintain. :-)

  5. Looks like your improvements are moving along great. I have wood in my kitchen and love it. But then I have tile in my bathrooms and love it. lol! Not much help am I? I do like the warmth of wood in the kitchen. Tile is quite a bit colder. I'm sue either will be lovely.

  8. We have had two homes with the tile placed on the diagonal and it looks so much better than the old tried and true straight tiled room. When we re-did our home in Maryland we laid the tile ourselves... a lot of extra cutting when things are on the diagonal but the end results are wonderful!

  10. Your bathroom floor looks great! The lighter color opens it up and goes great with the tub tile. As far as for a kitchen, I've always had tile in mine, but in the future would like (I do stress like!)to have wood floors. It just looks so good!

  11. This is looking amazing! Love the lighter, brighter look! I have hardwoods in my kitchen and I love the look, but the first time I dropped a can on them and they dented I freaked out. I've had to get over that. We didn't put them in, I would have chosen a more rustic wider board, and not so glossy, but wood is easier on your feet that stone or tile. and I go barefoot or in my socks so I need it to be easy.

  12. It is looking great! I would choose wood for the same reason as Debra. Also, My friend has tile in her kitchen, and she said if you go tile use a dark grout, because the grout gets dirty and you can't keep it clean. I do like the tile look, but I love the wide plank board better;) Thank you for visiting Homespun Happenings. I am so glad you found me. I am your newest follower too:)

  13. Great looking tile! We have wood floors in the kitchen in our new place, but that's how we bought it. In our old house, we had put ceramic tile in, we loved it. I like the wood, too, but ultimately it is whatever wears better to me. So far these wood floors seem to be fine.

  14. I would go with wood because it's easier on your feet and legs. I've had both, love the wood which we presently have. It's easy to keep clean.
Thanks for stopping by and your helpful suggestion on my dilemma. :-)

  15. I am stuck with tile in my kitchen -- and you might have loved it as the owner did it herself and made a perfectly awful mess because it was irregular. I have blogged about her bloopers when I was working on the kitchen. She had used two shades of grout, and it was slopped everywhere. I have whitewashed the whole mess so that I don't have to look at her screwups. The whitewash is holding up surprisingly well. Someday, if I can't sell my house, I will get cork, because that is the easiest thing for the comfort of the body.

  16. I love your new tile choice!. We put wood in our old house and I loved it. Our new house has tile and I can say that I prefer wood. ~Kristie
