Five On Friday

I'm joining Amy at Love Made My Home for Five-On-Friday.  My five this week are from a road trip we took mid-December.

One:  I'll start with the pretty. A bank of Poinsettias in a store put a smile on my face. I love them all bunched together.

Two:  The Illinois roads were very slippery the afternoon we left. Out in the middle of nowhere this poor guy was calmly standing by his overturned car calling for a tow truck. We stopped to see if he needed help, but he just waived us on. I still wonder how he got out of the car.

Three:  This is one of our wheel wells on the pick-up truck. When we got a little farther south, the ice that had collected started to melt. We could hear "clunks" as the pieces fell off in chunks. We were in a drive-thru waiting for our order, and it was a little embarrassing when big chunks dropped off all at one time.

Here's the wheel well after all the ice melted. In the southern states like Texas, the roads are sanded to reduce skidding. In Illinois, they salt the streets. That's salt residue on the side of the truck. We stopped at a car wash as soon as the temperature was high enough.
Car washes don't usually operate when the temperature is below a certain point. In Texas they close when the temperature is below 42 degrees.

Four:  Speaking of the drive thru. This sign should be perplexing, but unfortunately it's not uncommon.

Five:  Lots of eye candy from a stop at the little downtown in Franklin Tennessee, just south of Nashville.

But the only souvenir I brought home from the road trip was this T-shirt.

Hope you'll stop by Amy's for Five-On-Friday and add your five to the party.

Thanks for dropping by!

  1. Oh- Just lost my comment. I hit something on this new computer every once in a while and poof---there it goes.
Anyway- felt sorry for the poor guy. Glad he wasn't hurt.
Our car washes are open even when it is well below zero. They have dryer things to dry out the mechanism on your door latch (you have to open your doors) and it keeps the doors from freezing shut-one of the big BADS about freezing weather here if your car gets wet.
Have a wonderful weekend- xo Diana

  2. Oh my goodness, the way he's standing by his vehicle, his posture tells me he's very nonchalant about the situation. I'd be pacing, and frantic. Love the poinsettias, and reading about the salt vs. the sand. I'm Texan, but so far south, the roads never freeze....well, there's the possibility...but slim to none. Salt on our vehicles comes from sea water in the air.

My favorite of your five today is the sign!!!! lol

  3. A great five, although my heart sank reading about the poor man with his overturned vehicles. Loved all the pretties.

  4. That shirt is fun isn't it! Glad that the snow and ice came away from your truck alright, that is not fun is it, but even worse for that poor man who had an over turned vehicle. I hope that he was soon rescued and alright.

  5. A lovely five. The poinsettias are so colourful and cheery this time of year. Sounds like you had fun on that drive. Just as well you've got a big truck for those icy roads. Have a good weekend. B x

  6. I have to say, born, raised in Wisconsin - driving in winter my whole life - I've never seen a car flipped like that - that's crazy! Your inspiration shop pictures are nice. I love window displays.

  9. Oh my gosh that poor guy! So nice of you to ask if he needed help. And so glad he is ok. I would have been a mess! I know exactly what you are talking about with the snow sticking to the car, and falling off in clumps! And the salt. This time of year everything is just dirty. We are in the line of getting the ice storm predicted for so many, but I think we might luck out. Thank you for sharing the Franklin, TN photos. It looks like a place I need to visit! Long weekend get away maybe. I enjoyed your five.

  10. Glad that guy was okay. We haven't had much in the way of snow so far this winter. I'm glad about that and it is going to be warm this next week. Looks like a fun trip. xo Laura

  11. Your poinsettias are glorious. All the green leaves fell off mine when I got it home from the shop, such a pity. I could really do with a fake one, I'm sure I'd have more success!

  13. Poinsettias banked together make for such an impressive display. Your road trip looks quite eventful. Salt and sand on the roads is common here, too.

  14. I'm familiar with most of what you posted.
    Those ice chunks especially.
But never a car on it's side like that!
This afternoon we are supposed to get hit with ice storms. I'm glad you missed that!
