That's the only reason I can give for my obsession of British blog's and lifestyle.
Bubble and Squeak has been cooked on two blogs recently, Mamas Mercantile and Going Gently, so finally I went to Wikipedia to understand it. Turns out it's their version of hash, but always with cabbage thrown in it!
According to Wikipedia, it's called Bubble and Squeak because that's the sound cabbage makes when it cooks.
I hope someone British leaves a comment and let's us know if that's true or not. Frankly, I usually add cabbage to my hash and I've not heard any sounds at all.
Of course I had a slight inkling it was a dish made somehow with cabbage and potatoes as we use to adore watching Two Fat Ladies Can Cook, and they always seemed to be mulling over making Bubble and Squeak.

White cabbage tends to squeak a little when cooking probably because it retains some of the water. We call it bubble and squeak for any combination of vegetables. We would call Hash a combination with meat, usually cornbeef potatoes and onions. Thank you for the mention. I do think everyone has their own interpretation of this common use of using leftovers.
ReplyDeleteI love bubble and squeak, ours is made using leftover veggies and contains - for preference although it is flexible - roast potatoes, roast parsnips, carrots, Brussels sprouts and broccoli - but as I said any veggies, but for us it must have the roast potatoes (chopped) and sprouts. Glad you enjoyed yours and experimented!

ReplyDeleteBlimey I'm a Brit, and I have no idea why it's called Bubble and Squeak but yes it does have cabbage in it! I ought to add I don't think it's a popular dish here in the UK. In fact I never eaten it. :D

ReplyDeleteHave you tried toad in the hole yet? Sausages in a big Yorkshire pudding. Very good. (I do lots of British cookery, as you've probably noticed, but I haven't posted either of these.)
