Fixing The Kitchen Knobs

The builder's wife is a designer, and she used a variety of knobs and "aging" to make our kitchen appear to have evolved over time.

We're planning to sell the house soon. If we were staying, I would have the cabinets re-painted (probably black) to do away with the aging.

But I'll leave painting up to the next owners because I've learned from experience that changing one thing can lead to a whole bunch of other changes being needed!

A while back I found some metal knobs that sort of matched our metal ones on the pantry shelve doors above.

The knobs were on clearance at Target in the Fixer Upper folk's section called Hearth and Hand

The original price of each knob was $3.99, but they were on clearance for around a dollar apiece. I bought all they had and put them away for a future project!

Half of the upper and lower cabinets in the kitchen had glass knobs.

The glass broke on 3 of these knobs

The glass knobs on one top cabinet and two bottom cabinets broke off. I ignored them as long as I could even after I found metal ones to replace some of them.

I vacillated because I thought I would need to hire someone to replace the knobs. Wild Bill has chemo-related neuropathy in his hands, which makes even buttoning a shirt hard to do.

I figured the knobs I had stored away would work, but thought special tools would be needed...ones I didn't have.

The other day I started thinking, "How hard can it be?"

These bottom cabinets were glass knobs

Turns out, not hard at all! All I needed was my little needle nose pliers to loosen the backs that were on too tight! I was even able to screw the new knobs on with just my fingers.

All six bottom-cabinet-glass-knobs were replaced with metal ones. That way I was able to use one of the good glass knobs from the bottom cabinets to replace this upper glass one that was broken.

I've been finding that some things are a lot easier than you think they will be, it just takes getting started.

Thanks for dropping by!

  1. Very nice. Home repair and changes can be quite easy. All we can do is try.

  2. Good for you. Poor Bill and I thought I'd had every side effect chemo had to offer, but that's a new one on me.

    1. Janet, he had two types of chemo at the same time. One of them was really strong, which probably saved his life, but almost always causes severe neuropathy if not stopped in time.

  3. I am always afraid to get started with any project, but I know it can't be too hard. I have been thinking about adding knobs to our kitchen.

  4. Love the knobs. And you're right about replacement -- sometimes it's easier than we think!

  5. Rivercrest Cottage,
Love that you found knobs to replace the glass ones! Hardware is a great expen$e!
More than just finding knobs and replacing them and fixing broken ones, I l o v e your underlying message in this post.

  6. You go girl. This is so awesome you could change these out. It is amazing what we are capable of when we just try. Happy Sunday.

    1. Ah Kris...it was so easy I was actually embarrassed to say how long I had avoided trying to do it. Thank God I didn't pay $50 to have a handyman screw a few handles in! I was just too fearful to try.

  7. You are so right--we don't know until we try. In my case, it always turns into a much bigger project than I thought, LOL! But I manage to get it done and that's the main thing. If you want to sell those extra glass knobs, drop me a message! I am always on the lookout for them for our furniture refurbishing projects :)

    1. Granny, I think they're just cheap ones from Hobby Lobby. I think I need to leave them for the next home owners as replacements in case the ones on the top cabinets break in the future. If three already broke, the rest can't be far behind!

  8. I was going to make a joke about knobs but thought that would a bit like school boy humour, so I'll just say you've done a great job!

  9. Beautiful! These are small changes that definitely make a difference in how the cabinets look! I love them and the fact they were on sale makes them a steal! Changing out knobs is definitely an easy fix...it's the swapping out electrical plugs that no longer work that's the problem. :-) We are about to have to do one of those and I'm glad the hubster knows how...otherwise, it would stay non-working! Love and hugs!

    1. We learned the hard way on that too. Had to hire an electrician to get several plugs working when we moved into the house brand new! Turned out the plugs were never connected. It was an easy fix, but it would've been caught if we'd had the house inspected.

  10. I like the glass knobs and is what we have on our cabinets now. We also have glass door knobs on all the inside doors.

    1. Your glass knobs are really pretty. I think the ones they put into our spec home are from Hobby Lobby and not good quality like yours. At least I'll have about 3 knobs to leave for replacements when we sell the house.

  11. I like the hearth and home line, and I like those knobs! Great idea to do the bottoms and use the glass ones on top. And hooray for doing it yourself!

  12. The knobs look great - good for you! So true about how changing one thing leads to another.

  13. I love those knobs. I didn't know little knobs and drawer pulls could be so expensive until I went crazy that morning after looking at that "cottage" magazine from you. I just had to have new knobs and pulls! :) You did a good job!

    1. Henny Penny, I still feel bad about setting you off on a revamp of your house with the magazine subscription! I'm sure Poppy will not be happy when he sees I've re-upped your subscription for another year when I did mine.
