The Things We Keep: More Precious Finds

Our garage is finally getting back to normal with more boxes of things going out the door than being stored!

The two youngest daughters convinced me it is time to "Marie Kondo" the things my mother-in-law collected or saved, and then left behind.

This Hand-Painted Box Brings Me Joy!

In her book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, Marie Kondo tells you to touch each piece and ask yourself if it brings you joy?

That's a hard one to start doing, but it gets easier the more things you touch and pass on.

At first I wanted to keep everything of sentiment or value, but our life is in fluctuation right now...this is NOT the time to store a bunch of things!

My mother-in-law's next younger sister has always shared mom's interest in collectibles and hobbies. I breathed a sigh of relief when she happily accepted the many boxes of dolls and doll parts!

If I had kept these things, it would only be to sell them on-line or in a booth. If I passed them to this favorite aunt, I knew she would love them or find a good home for them.

Whatever she does with them it's now up to her...Kind of a "Tag You're It!" action.

The night I called the aunt, she had just finished putting an old doll together so I knew she was the right person for mom's favorite vintage dolls and doll parts.

Here are a few things I kept as they really do bring me joy. They are all old and had been stored away inside this hand-painted old wooden box:

1. This little wooden case holds thimbles. Mom gave me some vintage thimbles years ago, which I plan to add to the old thimbles she had stored in this box.

2. This very odd clamp was also in the box. I knew it must be something involved with sewing, but was perplexed with it until September's Country Living Magazine arrived.

Mom's Clamp

Country Living's "What's It Worth" Section had similar

According to the magazine's article, this is probably an Early-20th-Century Sewing Bird Clamp! Mom's bird clamp has what is probably a pin-cushion on the back of the bird.

Appears To Be A Pin-Cushion On The Bird's Back

3. A cute metal cat with a pin-cushion-bucket attached to the cat's side.

Another Pin-Cushion Of Sorts

The cat's head bobs up and down, and it feels like it might come out, but I don't want to ruin it if it doesn't.

4. An old case with lining, with a logo from a jewelry store in Birmingham. At first we thought Birmingham, Alabama, but the spelling of "Jewellers" and "Crooke" and the address on "High Street" makes us think it might be from England.

What Are These Used For?

Alabama or England?

We plan to do some research, especially to determine what were these used for...cracking nuts...crab cracking...hair crimpers maybe?

Since they were with other sewing things, are they used for something in that field? Anyone have an idea for us?

Adorable Little Free Pantry

In my last post, I showed you the Little Free Library on a street in the small downtown area of McKinney Texas.

Right down the street there's also a Little Free Pantry...

When I say small, I really mean small as you can see from these photos. It's just a large cabinet with simple directions...

Take What You Need - Leave What You Can

The glass doors of the pantry have further instructions. The left door says it in English:

To best serve the need, please take only 5 items.

The right door repeats the instructions in Spanish:

The next trip we make to McKinney, I plan to take some of our extras, both books and food, to help stock the little pantry and the little library.

It's such a worthy cause, especially because it's "People to People" without any supervision and lengthy rules!

I also plan to stop in the two shops that the Little Free Library and Little Free Pantry sit in front of, and I'll ask how the pantry and the library came to be.

There's a story there, of that much I'm sure...a story of giving and community.

Thanks for stopping by!

A Stop At Three French Hens Wildwood MO

We made a stop at a beautiful shop in
Wildwood Missouri a few weeks back.

No photos allowed in the shop, but here's
some from their Facebook site and a link below
so you can look (shop) to your heart's content.

ALL PHOTOS FROM FACEBOOK SITE:
THREE FRENCH HENS ANTIQUES

While there, I discovered a new love...
It's called COLOR!!!

This shop was so vibrant with color.

It made me re-think the direction I have been
headed with all my painting the furniture white.

I should have bought one or two of these...
but I guess that will be another trip.

The staff was wonderful.
The shop's owner was so kind. I loved the way
her walls were done so she took a picture for me
and emailed it to me on the spot!

Hope you'll get a chance to stop by their shop.

They're a little West of St Louis and you can
also buy by phone.

Click on Facebook link.

Thanks for dropping by. I'll be back soon
to show you what I bought at the shop.

New Shoes and The 75 Cent Dress

Remember our newest grand-girl Livvie Lu
who was born 5 months ago?

Her mama got her some new shoes recently.

I thought they were so cute,
I stole her pictures to show them to you...

Pink poka dots are a girl's best friend, right?
I knew you'd agree!

Livvie will attend her first wedding this week.

Mama ordered her a new dress,
which still hasn't arrived yet.

While at a yard sale recently, I spotted
this brand new dress for sale for 75 cents.

I washed it on delicate, pressed the ties in
the back a little, and told Livvie's mama
"no worries"

I think the 75 cent dress will do.

And, just wait 'til you see the purple dress
Livvie's cousin Lily, the flower girl, will wear!

Getting Ready For The 4th

I bought one too many "old pieces of junk" as Wild Bill calls my garage sale treasures. My car sure was loaded down on my way home from Illinois.

I had to take my clothes out of my rolling duffel, put them in garbage bags, and fit them all around the new kitchen island and other stuff I bought.

Here's what I'm doing with the old kitchen island...

I put it in the breakfast room, which has pretty much been empty until now.

The pot rack hooks at the top make great cup holders. When colder weather comes I plan to make it a coffee/hot chocolate station like I've seen other bloggers do. Love those!

For now I put some little blue and white cups at top in honor of July 4th, and I'm on the lookout for all things red, white and blue in the house.

Wild Bill offered to list it on Craig's for me. Silly guy. I can use it in so many areas of the house!

I think he was really disappointed to know it was staying!

My Last Island, Honest

I've been on an eternal quest for an island for the center of our kitchen for over 2 years.

I think I finally found "The One"

Please overlook the background. We're in the middle of trying to pick the perfect gray paint color for middle daughter's kitchen.

The back looks just like the front and the doors open from both sides. yay! I'm thinking storage for all the counter-top appliances.

Here's our kitchen and the island we have now. No windows in the kitchen so getting pictures is a problem. sorry.

The kitchen's cabinets are kind of busy, so the pots hanging in the middle of the kitchen just add to the messy look. It doesn't help that I love clutter!

The only picture I have of the kitchen without an island is from Christmas. It just seems like there should be an island in the middle doesn't it?

Wild Bill was relieved to hear the new island is a reproduction and not an old relic dug out of a pile in a dusty shop!

He's not with me on this trip to Illinois, and I think he's worried about what I might drag home.

He probably has a right to worry since I bought the island at the Kane County Flea Market last weekend. So many old things, so little time!

My daughter lives right near it, but she had never heard of the Kane County Flea Market. Luckily I had read about it on Rosemary's blog:

Rosemary often talks about selling at the Kane County Flea Market, but we didn't see her there.

Maybe we'll have to go back again this Saturday?

Talkin' Bears

Sometimes you get the bear...

Sometimes the bear gets you...

Only 3 months old on the 7th of June and she already knows Grammy can't resist her smile.

Happy Monday!
