New Wheels In The Kitchen

Wheels in the kitchen? YES!

This is something I've been wanting to do
for over a year.

Local hardware stores sell several types of
wheels for around $4 for the large ones.

The travertine tile we put in the kitchen
is soft and easily dings, so when I bought
this island last year, I put it on a small rug.

My thought was the rug would keep the
island's wood from scraping the tile...

but what it really meant was
I avoided cleaning the floor because
of the rug.

Are you following me so far?

It is NOT (as Wild Bill says) that
I just love torturing the furniture.
Honest.
I'm going to confess right here that there
is one more thing that needs to be done
to make this piece perfect:
See the ends?
The shelves are too narrow to hold
anything. I put a small chicken on one
shelf to show you the depth.
Not much room there...

Do you have any ideas on how to
make the ends functional?

Please leave a comment and let
me know what you would do
with the ends.

By the way, see the flat space above
the stove? The one with that plaster scrolly
thingy that won't stay even?

Don't you think it needs some lettering instead?
Ideas? Let's talk.

Thanks for dropping by!

What I'm Working On Wednesday

Here's some vintage stuff I bought
recently and other treasures I'm work-
ing on from my "Fixin' To Do" list:

I bought this old bedspread at an estate
sale a couple weekends ago. A lot of
material for $12!
I bought it to make slipcovers,
so I was surprised after I washed
and dried it several times to find
it's in perfect condition.

I'm still going to cut it up, but a
stain would've made it easier!

The gray turkey is finally going
white. One more coat, then
dark wax on, dark wax off...

While I had the Swiss Coffee
paint out, my old bench got
a few coats too.

I'm giving myself 3 more days
to finish it or get rid of it.

No more storing unfinished
projects in hidey-holes...
I promised myself this when I
started purging all my boxes
and closets!

The yellow-y looking paint is
Annie Sloan's in Old White. I much
prefer the Swiss Coffee by Behr.

I bought this vintage strainer at
the same estate sale as the old
bedspread.

You should see Wild Bill's face
when I verbally admire the dings
and dents on this!

I love the gray-blue color. I'm going
to hang it on the kitchen cabinets.

While purging closets recently, I
found a "first Christmas" picture of
Lily (our 4-year-old grandchild).

My favorite picture of her cousin
Ben is this old "Fall at the Farm"
picture of him with his two
adoring parents.

Ben's now a "grown up" of
three and a half, and a big
brother to Olivia (8 months),
but this is still my favorite
picture of him.

Here's my favorite picture of
our older daughter's two sons,
Jack and Tucker, taken in 2008
during Thanksgiving vacation.

That year, Tucker climbed up the
bench and knocked off all the
pillows to reach the hats hanging
on the wall and some vintage
cowboy boots. We found him
all decked out.
He sure was cute!

Better go find those frames...

Thanks for stopping by!

Chalkboard Project Done

I had an old homemade chalkboard
that needed a little something...

I had a little spice rack that needed
to be used or be gone.

We put them together.

When I saw "we" I mean Wild Bill
did it for me.

Sure, I could've done it myself.
But the man needed a job to do.

Anyway, I was busy staring at
these paint sample cards.

The left one is Gray Squirrel
by Martha Stewart.
The other is Behr's Macchiato.

I did the hard work of unscrewing
the wall switch a little so I could
slip the paint samples behind it.

So much easier than painting large
patches of paint samples on the wall and
leaving them there for 6 to 12 months!
(progress around here does tend to be slow)

I'm making sure the paint colors
look OK with the kitchen cabinets.

I'm now convinced I don't want to
paint the cabinets -- but everything
else in the house is fair game!

Anyways...back to the chalkboard.
So glad to finally have a project done!

Chandy Party

Recently, with the move and all, I have been blocked about what to take pictures of and blog about. Then I saw that Savvy City Farmer is throwing a Chandy Party for bloggers to post about their chandeliers. Well, I can do that! So I moved all the crap that still hasn't been unpacked or put away, and took some pictures of the part of the dining room that's usable. Finally I'm going to show some parts of the house.

This is an old chandelier that the builder's designer wife put in the house. I love it/I hate it/I love it sometimes...and sometimes not. It is very thin and fragile looking. Not one of the chunky chandeliers I love, so to beef it up I put a swag of rustic pine branches and pine cones on it.

Now in my last post on my word for the year, I told you I was going to follow the Use it up, Wear it out, Make it do, or You do without philosophy. That includes this chandelier. So, since I can't replace it, I'm going to focus on what I like about it:

First of all, this chandy has "hats" as Wild Bill calls the shades on lights. Leave it to a Texan to have all his taste in his mouth. His mother told me that, so don't think I'm judging...just relating a fact she pointed out, even tho she loves her only child dearly!

The hats give the lights a gold-ish glow when not being hit by the flash I'm trying to learn how to turn off. I love a soft yellow gold light, especially in the dining room.

Second, the metal is old and crumbly and brown and aged. I didn't even have to do anything with glaze or stain to get it aged.

The builder had a faux painter paint the ceiling a dark brown with a reflective glaze, the chandelier's lights cause a sparkling moody effect on the ceiling, which I really like.

I've been going through Pinterest and other blogs and old magazines looking for ideas to beef this chandelier up. If you have an idea you'd like to share with me in this regard, please leave me a comment. Like everyone else, I love to read your comments.

Here's a picture of the table and chairs in the room. I haven't removed all the Christmas decor yet, so I just mixed in some Valentine's Day stuff to try to start moving away for Christmas.

I'm thinking pine cones and evergreens do go with Winter too, right? I mean, they're not just for Christmas, don't you agree?

The table is from Pottery Barn and the Valentine's Day sign is from Hobby Lobby. They have some really cute V-Day decorations already in their isles.

So, that's the chandelier and the part of the dining room I can show you for now. Hope to see what you have hanging from your ceiling at the Savvy City Farmer's Chandy Party. You can click on the link below to add your post and see what everyone else is showing. Thanks for dropping by.

Word For Year Is 13

I want to make my life simple this year, so my word for the coming year is the number "13". This number represents 13 words of a mantra I plan to follow in 2012, hoping to be a better person by the time we get to 2013.

So I'm living this year by "13", standing for thirteen words of a little diddy my Grandmother used to say:

Use it up
Wear it out
Make it do, or,
You do without

I'm putting my word 'out there' this year by joining up with Layla's This Little Word Of Mine party at The Lettered Cottage. I hope you will join the party too because I'd love to see what word you've chosen to live this year by.
