Frontiersmen And Lewis And Clark Expedition

How do you decide what to watch on TV or online? There's just so many interesting programs and variety, it actually makes it hard to decide.

We happened upon a new series on the History Channel, The Men Who Built America: Frontiersmen, which has completely captured our attention! 

Fort Boonesborough Kentucky

The first episode was about the Revolutionary War,  Daniel Boone, and the early Frontier fort of Boonesborough Kentucky.

The second episode focused on the Lewis and Clark Expedition with Sacajawea, and this was my favorite episode so far.

If you're looking for an interesting series, this just might be one you'll enjoy too.

Now here's a funny story: A distant family member and spouse took a long and expensive group trip, which followed the Lewis and Clark Expedition's trail. They loved every part of the trip, and when the couple returned home they attended a small dinner party where they excitedly talked about the Lewis and Clark Expedition most of the night.

As one older lady was leaving the dinner party, she thanked the host for having her. Then she turned to the other couple and told them how much she enjoyed hearing all about their friends Lois and Clark's travel trip!

Home And Garden Thursday Party Feature

Blog parties provide a source of inspiration for me. To be honest, I love to get a look at what's going on in other people's lives and houses. 

Maybe my nickname should be Nosy Rosy instead of Sugar?

Protecting Wood Floors

Before I get to protecting the wood floors, I'd like to give my thanks to Cindy who hosts a party called Amaze Me Monday. Cindy featured a recent post from this blog called Lost and Found. Back to the mundane...I'm working on our wooden stools that have been stored in the garage for a while. I'm trying to clear the garage out, and we have room for these in the house now since we sold our metal stools.

I started working on the paint color, but worried about scratching the floors. The stools originally came with slider-type caps on the bottom. They were good for tile floors, but not for the wood floors we have now. 

I've used these temporary cushioned caps on our stools and chairs in the past. You know the type that stick on? Well, the "sticky" ones tend to come off. I decided to find a permanent solution and found these cushioned caps.

These cushioned caps, which are carried by both Home Depot and Lowe's, have a metal brad that nails into the bottom of wooden chair and stool legs. Can you see it just above the wood it's sitting on in this picture below?

After popping off the plastic sliders, all I had to do was hammer these caps in...TA-DA!

I thought I'd share this just in case someone else out there has wooden floors that need protecting. This is a much better solution than the sticky ones for sure. 

As always, just my personal opinion. No one has ever offered to pay me for my opinion and frankly I don't blame them.

Amaze Me Monday

Daughter's Built-In Bench Update

The on-going saga of our middle daughter's closet "mud-room" got another project done while we were visiting last December. 

I'm hoping she will be able to provide pictures of it painted someday soon (hint, hint, Jaysa!) but for now, I'm just showing what we were able to complete before we had to leave.

Wild Bill took a little saw with him to cut boards since he doesn't like to depend on Lowe's or Home Depot to cut boards when he needs a perfect cut. 

This little Rockwell Compact Circular Saw cut some big, thick boards (as you can see to the left of the pictures above) so he highly recommends it. He bought it for around $85 and, while there are other similar little saws, this is just the one he favors and is not an ad for them. He has big saws and such at home, but we were traveling and this little saw accomplished so much.

There was an unfortunate accident with a drill and a thumb during framing. I tried to find a picture of the framing Wild Bill did for the bottom of the bench, but unfortunately all pictures at this stage had some drips of red that I had to crop out of the picture as best I could...

As you can see he created a frame, then added a slab of MDF board to create a surface for storage baskets under the seat. Next he added six 4x4's he cut into posts to support the bench seat and topped that with another slab of MDF.  His measurements started with how high the bench needed to be for seating and how much space the opening needed to be to fit 12 inch baskets under the seat with room to slide in and out easily. 

Jaysa plans to add a board that will have cushioning and fabric attached, so the quality of the top board didn't matter. Also, she will be adding trim to the bench before she primes and paints it. The trim will match the trim on the upper shelves. Here's some pictures of that as it was being added previously:

You'll notice all the various shades of paint on the wall outside the closet. Every wall in that little area has about 15 colors on it. We are very indecisive when it comes to choosing our wall paint colors!

Blue Kitchen

I was happy to be featured over at the

Anything Blue Friday

party at The Dedicated House's blog.

 I overdosed on country blue way back in the

late 80's, so we have hardly any blue in our house.

For the Anything Blue Friday party, I submitted a

 post I did on that lovely green-blue kitchen in a

house we toured a while back. 

Seems everyone loves that kitchen...

If I get brave, I just might paint our kitchen's hood
that color or add it in a few small spots.
